She was nominated for an Oscar and is all the rage on Netlix: a nasty movie

Civil histories are a very good choice to review the unknown about the country, but in a lighter way than with a history book. Sometimes, the film shows a historical event that shows more humanity, through the construction of characters with which one can convert, suffer, laugh and be angry. These kinds of people star in this two hour and five minute production by Kasi Lemmons.

The protagonist is played by Cynthia Erivo, who was nominated for the Oscars for Best Actress for the way she acted in this movie based on real events. The synopsis for Harriet (2019) on Netflix reads: “In this biopic, Harriet Tubman escapes slavery and risks her life to gain freedom for others via the Underground Train.”

The cast also includes Joe Alwyn, the boyfriend of the famous singer Taylor Swift, as Gideon Brodess. In the movie, Alwyn plays the son of Lord Harriet. Because of this, Brodess also ends up being Harriet’s master and turns the relationship between them after they shared a childhood together.

“Many relationships at that time between a slave and a slave were complicated and really unpleasant. But the slaves could never say, “I don’t want to be in this relationship”. There was no choice. And where is the difference: For her there was no choice, for him, yes,” explained Cynthia Erivo on the US site Refinery29.

What About Harriet (2019)

Harriet’s Plot tells the story of Araminta Ross, nicknamed Minty, a maid from the Brodess family plantation, who wants to escape from the farm with her family. Things come to a head when the slaves’ rightful owner, Edward Brodess, dies suddenly and the family decides to sell the Mintys to other owners. It is at that moment that she decides to flee alone, and Brodessa’s son follows her.

The hunt reaches the Pennsylvania state line as Minty passes the free man, but his family remains enslaved. In the new state of Pennsylvania she meets the Anti-Slavery Society and changes her name to Harriet Tubman. She eventually decides to return to rescue her husband John Tubman, played by Zackary Momoh, only to find that he is dead upon arrival.

Thus, she decides to save the lives of her remaining relatives and becomes a savior by using the clandestine railway network.
