Indigenous developer Kitselas Geothermal has secured Shell Canada as a development partner for its geothermal heat and power project in Terrace, British Columbia, Canada.

In a statement shared today, it was announced that Kitselas Geothermal Inc., an indigenous company owned by Kitsellus Development and Borealis Geothermal, has signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with Shell Canada Energy, which will begin in July. With effect from 29 of 2022.

JDA Terrace supports the risk and assessment of geothermal resource in the British Columbia region, after which each party will make a decision on further development. By entering into this agreement, Kitselas Geothermal and Shell Canada hope to create a greater understanding of the potential of geothermal energy and support the development of renewable green energy in Northwest BC, including the “direct use” of heat.

Kitselas Geothermal’s vision is to supply renewable industrial heating options to the Terrace area. Economic self-determination of Kitsell’s First Nation through long-term heat purchase agreements is a goal of the project.

Dr. David Traye, PhD, President of Kitselas Geothermal, says, “First Nations have used ‘direct’ geothermal energy in the region for thousands of years. Exploring the potential of commercial energy: clean, sustainable, responsible and Credibility is a natural move.”

Kitcellus Geothermal CEO Alison Thompson says: “The opportunity to continue this project, test, de-risk and progress the geothermal heat capacity in the Terrace area under this JDA is an important milestone. The relationship is proud of the significant contribution that Borealis has made as a Project Exploration and Development Technology Partner in the unique geological environment of Western and Northern Canada. Today this project marks the point in which Kitselas Geothermal and Shell Canada are engaged in this project. But will start working and learning together.”

Shell Canada Geothermal Business Opportunities Manager Sarah Kassam says: “Globally, Shell is investing in renewable energy as part of our Powering Progress strategy, which includes the goal of becoming a net-zero energy business by 2050. Kitselas’s By signing the JDA with Geothermal, Shell Canada hopes to develop a greater understanding of the potential of geothermal energy and support renewable energy development with Kitselas Geothermal in the Terrace, BC area.

Kitsellus Geothermal is controlled by the Kitsells Development Corporation, the economic arm of the Kitsells First Nation. Kitselas First Nation, through Kitselas Geothermal, is proudly positioned to provide near-term clean energy solutions in the Terrace area.
