As the Marvel Cinematic Universe expands, it’s more than likely that the mix of superheroes and storylines will become more diverse and complex. Some people’s adventures will take them to other planets or lands, and everyone’s problems will eventually mesh with each other. As happened in Avengers : Endgame. One of the possible alliances that could develop in the coming years is that of Les Defenders.
This is a group that has had different characters within it. The Avengers, are renewed from time to time or, depending on the story, have some instead of others. The function is essentially the same: to protect the earth against various threats. Gathering a handful of skills to deal with adversaries or situations that, as individuals, are beyond them.
Good that The defenders already has a Netflix predecessor, and Marvel and Disney still need time to bring them together. If so, there are a few clues to consider. The mention of the streaming which brought together Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, serves as an example to recreate the nature of the group. Despite the differences that separate them, they will come together for a greater cause. Beyond that, is it possible to see it on the big screen?
Les Defenders and Dan Slott’s alert
As D23 Expo was unfolding, Dan Slott tweeted the following:
“I just realized….. The closer the Marvel Cinematic Universe gets to its version of the Silver Surfer, the closer we get to a possible… Les Defenders! “. While this is just one possible interpretation of the story, there’s a lot of logic to it all.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is undergoing something of a restructuring. After Avengers : Endgame several superiors withdrew from the narrative or changed their roadmap for new quests. Within them, a tendency seems to emerge: particular stories end up coinciding. From Hawkeye and Kate Bishop to the future introduction of Thunderbolts. In the middle of the two projects, the future integration of the stories of Mme. Marvel y Captain Marvel.
After three phases in which the Marvel Cinematic Universe focused on laying the groundwork for its narrative, it now seems more and more inclined to mix up its stories. This, beyond the appearance of a gesture towards the . fandomThe fandom also has a logical background: in a world where so many superheroes coexist, it is normal that they can have relationships with each other, as happens in the comics thanks to the work of characters such as Jim Shooter .
Is the adaptation viable?
Yes. The first formation of The defenders consists of Hulk, Doctor Strange, Namor and Silver Surfer. This group was featured in the comic The Defenders in the Marvel Report # 1, published in 1971, penned by Roy Thomas. Initially, this formation bore the name “The Three Titans” like its predecessor, with the three names mentioned above. Later, in the aforementioned comic, a fourth member was added.
The inclusion of this fourth member, Doctor Strange, came at the suggestion of Stan Lee. Between Thomas’s idea and Lee’s need, in a managerial role, came the possibility of tackling a story with a new band: The defenders. Although multiple superheroes have passed through this group, this initial line-up may be composed within the Marvel Cinematic Universe once the Silver Surfer is introduced, as Dan Slott reminded us.
For him to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the immediate reference is to keep in mind that this character, in the comics, was introduced in… Fantastic Four #48, published in March 1966. According to the release schedule for Phases 5 and 6, the adaptation of this story will be unveiled on November 8, 2024. So while this is an option, we have yet to wait and see how the narrative develops.
The current (and immediate future) context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With the conclusion of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Namor will be introduced to the story. It will take place at Black Panther : Wakanda Forever Following Black panter (2018). Meanwhile, the general storytelling seems to be moving forward on an upcoming Hulk movie, paired with the comics. World War Hulk and Doctor Strange faces challenges in different dimensions of the multiverse. In this context, the only thing missing is Silver Surfer.
However, the context of the story, focused on the introduction of new characters and the establishment of new relationships between them, is also marked by an aspect. Like Kevin Feige, they are separated. In a recent statement, the executive explained: One of the situations we will see in the Captain America movie is that of a world without The Avengers“. This power vacuum could be one of the pivots of history in the years to come.
Without a group of superheroes tasked with defending the Earth, it’s likely that there will be different power struggles between them and new forces will emerge to address different issues. This can be adapted by crossings by crossing characters in different stories, or by forming new groups. In this last scenario, it is not unreasonable to think of Les Defenders.
