The Shangri-La dialogue scheduled to take place in Singapore in early June is set to continue after the World Economic Forum announced it would cancel this year’s event, citing ‘tragic circumstances across geographical areas’. ‘and an uncertain travel outlook due to the pandemic.
‘The positive response to invitations’ to the event is encouraged by the government, the Singapore government said in a statement late Monday, adding that the responses highlighted’ the strong commitment of government leaders to address security challenges, even in the midst of of the Covid-19 pandemic. . ”
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is expected to be among those attending the event, focusing on global defense and security issues. The organizer of the event also confirmed that the decision of the World Economic Forum does not affect his plans.
“We have a full range of ministers and other senior leaders from around the world planning to attend our event,” a spokesman for the event’s organizer said in a statement.
These developments come as Singapore moves aggressively to eradicate the spread of the virus in the city. Authorities have banned a ban on meals, saying people who can limit work from home and group sizes to two, in measures lasting until June 13, after the dates of the conference. The city-state also suspended most personal learning at schools.
The government said it would “continue to monitor the local and global Covid-19 situation and make the necessary adjustments” in the light of the evolving situation. “Thus, the health and safety of all will be the most important consideration.”
