Sitges Beaches renews EMAS and ISO certificates

• Has been granted ISO 14001:215 certification for the commitment of the municipality in the management of beaches to protect the environment.

• Beaches have also renewed the EMAS Environmental Management System based on improving resource efficiency and good practices in coastal environment management.

Sitges has renewed the certification of the Environmental Management System EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, its abbreviation in English), the European certification referring to the environmental level. EMAS defines a management and audit plan to contribute to the development of a circular economy through analysis and measurement of efficient use of resources as well as implementation and fulfillment of tasks under an environmental approach. After passing the same audit, the villa has also renewed the ISO 14001:2015 certification on beaches. The certification, which has been available since 2017, is given in recognition of an assumed commitment to protecting the environment on beaches. Maintenance of certification obliges the local people to follow a program that includes the implementation and verification of corrective actions through an annual follow-up audit. Councilor for Beaches, Guillaume Escolo, confirmed that “the audit passed with flying colors, and he congratulated us on the quality and environmental condition of our beaches.” These two certifications have been added to the 14 beaches accredited with the 9 Blue Flags and the Biosphere Certification: “This makes Sitges beaches a leader in terms of quality and sustainability with respect to the protection of the natural environment”, assures Guillaume Gave. school . Sitges also became the first destination in Catalonia to receive Biosphere Gold certification, on 25 July, following the various tourism brands of the City of Barcelona and Platinum’s Diputació de Barcelona. As such, only one region of Canada, Gijón, Las Palmas and Sitges, is currently recognized. The certification shows that there is also private sector involvement in the destination’s commitment to a model of sustainable development.

Water quality remains excellent

The results of the bi-weekly water quality control carried out by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) show that the bathing water in Sitges remains excellent.
