Smith-Schuster Could Return With The Chiefs This Sunday

Kansas City, Mo. ( Associated Press) – The Chiefs could be wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster this weekend against the Los Angeles Rams after returning to practice Wednesday for the first time since assuming concussion protocol two weeks ago.

Head coach Andy Reid indicated Smith-Schuster needs to complete at least one workout to pass the protocol, but all indications are he will be available Sunday. His return could provide a boost to an offense that is without receiver Mecole Hardman and perhaps Kadarius Toney, who missed Wednesday’s practice with a hamstring injury.

“Hopefully everything goes well with the protocols and he’s ready,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “Having that energy on the wing – he’s a great player and teammate, and you always want to get those guys back on the field.”

Guard Joe Thune did not practice Wednesday because of an ankle injury, although Reid said he is improving. Safety Juan Thornhill trained through a calf injury, as did cornerback Jalen Watson with an arm ailment.

The Chiefs made several changes. He sent running back Clyde Edwards-Helair to the disabled list with a sprained ankle, activated offensive lineman Lucas Niang after going on the unfit-to-play list, and tight end Kendall to the practice squad after Jordan’s injury. Signed Blanton.

Smith-Schuster only missed last week’s 30-27 win over the Chargers after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit against Jacksonville safety Andre Sisco the week before that left him stationary on the grass at Arrowhead Stadium.

The receiver, who signed a provisional one-year deal with Kansas City, has produced more since becoming familiar with Mahomes and the offense. He caught five passes for 113 yards and a touchdown against Buffalo; seven more for 124 yards and a score against San Francisco; and catches of 10 and 88 yards against Tennessee before being injured.
