Home mobile phone users should find out more about any roaming charges before traveling to the UK. Of the three major mobile operators in Austria, only one offers free roaming for the UK.
2.49 euros per minute with A1
The Austrian market leader A1 has been charging roaming fees for stays in Great Britain since last year. The UK, like Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Monaco and Belarus, is in Zone 2 on A1 and incurs roaming charges of €2.49 per minute outgoing, €1.49 incoming and €1.49 per 100 Kilobytes (=0.1 megabytes) of data. All customers of the sub-brands Bob, Yesss, Red Bull Mobile and Educom are also affected.
Six cents a minute at three
In the meantime, Drei (Hutchison Drei Austria) is also charging for connections in Great Britain, as Heise reports online. Great Britain is in zone 1 with three mini-states such as the Vatican, Monaco and San Marino, outgoing calls cost six cents per minute, incoming calls are charged at just under 1.3 cents per minute, you pay per megabyte (=1,000 kilobytes) of data traffic six cents.
Magenta does not charge any roaming costs
Magenta, the Austrian subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, does not charge any roaming fees for the UK despite Brexit. The previous European regulations and the “Roam like at home” tariffs continue to apply to telephone calls and surfing the Internet.
