Shonda Rhimes has sobering words to fans of Bridgerton, who are hoping Regge-Jean Page will one day return to the Netflix series.
The Emmy-winning TV mogul told Variety this week that she does not expect Page to reprise her role as Simon Bassett, Duke of Hastings, in future seasons of Bridgerton.
“Quite rightly,” he said, “I signed up to shoot this beautiful story, this closed storyline. I’m fine! Said Rhimes, executive producer on Bridgerton and Grey’s Anatomy, as well as his other favorite series. “And I don’t blame him for that. I think he was really smart, leaving impeccability as perfection. “
Paige received an Emmy nomination for her role as The Duke in the first season of Bridgerton, which debuted in December 2020. In April, it was announced that the British and Zimbabwean heartthrob would be leaving the series as his character is only intended for a one-season arc.
Season 2, slated for release next year, will instead focus on Lord Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan Bailey.
The exact circumstances of Page’s departure from Bridgerton remain unclear. Later in April, The Hollywood Reporter cited “sources close to the show” claiming that the actor had actually turned down an offer to appear between three and five episodes of season 2 at a cost of $ 50,000 per episode.
The actor has never publicly commented on this report, but he has used his newfound fame on a variety of projects. Next year, Paige will appear in the Netflix thriller The Gray Man, which stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. His name is also frequently mentioned in speculative reports about who could replace Daniel Craig in the James Bond franchise.
This breakthrough success, Rhimes told Variety, is another reason she can’t imagine a scenario in which Paige will return to Bridgerton.
“He’s a huge star now,” she explained. “As I like to say, the idea that we write Regé to be in the background doesn’t make any sense to me. ‘What would he do?’ that’s what I like to say. “
It looks like Rhimes chose to interpret the fans’ discouragement over Duke’s absence as a sign of the show’s strength and Page’s dreamy performance. However, she expressed her condolences to the fans.
“The attachment of people to couples is real “I mean, I know it better than anyone,” she said. “And I think it means success. But I understand their despair. “
