After conducting a remarkable franchise renaissance, Sacramento Kings general manager Monte McNair has agreed to a contract extension, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.
McNair, who had entered the final months of his original three-year contract, oversaw the rise of the Kings (27–18) to third place in the Western Conference and a playoff berth that followed a postseason miss for 16 years. would end.
The sources said the Kings are also working to finalize a new contract for assistant general manager Wes Wilcox. Wilcox and McNair worked closely together to transform the organization into a Western contender.
After arriving in Sacramento in 2020, McNair worked with assistant GM Wes Wilcox to oversee the stabilization of a wayward organization and engineered a series of moves that advanced the franchise into Western Conference competition.
These included the selection and trade of Tyrese Halliburton for All-Star center Domantas Sabonis, the selection of impressive rookie Keegan Murray, the acquisition of guard Kevin Hueter in a trade, and the signing of Coach of the Year candidate Mike Brown. Another key to the Kings’ revitalization: the rise of point guard D’Oran Fox, an All-Star candidate in the West.
The Kings hired McNair after 13 seasons as the Houston Rockets’ front office executive, tasking him with reshaping a historically dysfunctional and underperforming franchise.
