“Space Invaders” decades ago helped turn a generation in love with computers and gaming.

While it may appear a bit late, the agency’s “Roman Space Observer” debut now has a purpose: to promote its Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope through some nostalgic fun.

Players have one minute to “capture” as many space objects as they can. As galaxies, rogue exoplanets and even black holes pass by, old-school music plays. After the minute is up, players receive points for collecting items and can learn more about what they have caught.

Finite and fun, the game was developed to teach players about cosmic objects and the telescope, which is set to launch in the middle of the decade.

The agency says the Roman Space Telescope will be Hubble’s “wide-eyed cousin,” capturing 100 times more sky than the 1990s telescope with the help of massive 300-megapixel instrumentation.

Named after NASA executive Nancy Roman, known as “Hubble’s mother,” for helping the agency give birth to the famed Hubble Space Telescope, the new observatory to dramatically observe and study the universe Expanding the capacity of researchers. Roman was a formidable astronomer, and the observatory bearing his name will investigate mysteries such as what caused the expansion of the universe and what planets exist beyond our solar system.

The new observatory will capture wide-field images of space and map and measure the universe using various state-of-the-art technologies.

Compared to the missions it promotes, the 8-bit game is really simple. But sometimes it’s a little easier fun to get people interested in science — and excited about an upcoming mission.
