Spain investigates 21 who escaped from plane after emergency landing

PALMA, Balearic Islands (NWN) – Spanish authorities were investigating the unauthorized landing of 21 people on Saturday from a plane that made an emergency medical landing on the island of Mallorca.

The incident under investigation occurred late Friday when an Air Arabia flight from Casablanca to Istanbul made an emergency landing involving a passenger. Upon landing, 21 people forcibly made their way out of the plane, forcing security officials to temporarily close the airport.

Aina Calvo, a government official in the Balearic Islands, said police had detained 12 people and were in custody. These include nine people who left the plane illegally, the man who was said to be ill, the man’s accomplice, and a man who was arrested for a fight with an officer on the plane.

Police are still looking for 12 more people.

Investigators are considering the hypothesis that the passenger who provoked the emergency landing was not actually ill.

“All fronts (for investigation) are open at this time and there is no information that allows us to confirm that this is a conspiracy to commit unauthorized immigration,” Calvo said. “The unprecedented thing is that one person feels sick and … 21 people jump on the runway and run around, because that puts air traffic in danger.”
