You can now exclusively see the Spanish trailer of THE ANIMAL KINGDOM, the film by Thomas Cailley that will be released in cinemas on October 20th after passing through the Sitges Festival, where it will be present in the official section.
In a world hit by a wave of mutations that are gradually turning some people into animals, François does everything he can to save his wife, who is affected by this mysterious disease. As society is forced into a new order, François, along with Émile, his 16-year-old son, begins a quest that will change it forever.
Starring Romain Duris, Paul Kircher (Silver Shell in San Sebastián 2022) and Adèle Exarchopoulos, the film combines the fantasy genre with family drama and is set in a near future suffering from a strange pandemic of advancing human-animal mutations. In addition to the conceptual risk, critics also praised the surprising special effects used to depict the “creatures,” the design process of which took 18 months.
In the director’s words: “Given the current ecological emergency, I believe it is critical to invent new narratives that explore our interactions with the rest of the living world and imagine new frontiers. The idea of human-animal mutation allows us to approach this question from a different, concrete physical point of view, in the bodies of the characters themselves. Not through the prism of the inevitable collapse or some other post-apocalyptic story, but through representation of a vital, violent and creative impulse. I was also interested in bringing about these mutations in today’s world. ”
He said that too “I am very interested in the emergence of imagination in our daily lives. This friction between reality and fiction is a valuable source of empathy, change, disruption, comedy. Change is here, everywhere, and “society must face it.” ”
