Sports Director of VfB Stuttgart: That’s what Sven Mislintat says about his future after the Frankfurt game

After VfB Stuttgart lost 3-1 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt, the sporting director’s future was again an issue.

After the 1:3 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt, Sven Mislintat ran alone towards the Stuttgart fans. A short round of applause, that’s it. The otherwise impulsive Westphalian was calmer than usual on Saturday afternoon, which he didn’t attribute to the tense mood within the club, but simply to the fact that there was little reason to get excited after the deserved defeat. The referees did nothing wrong this time.

The 49-year-old appeared refreshed afterwards for the debriefing of the game, which of course also dealt with him and his future. He repeated what he had said the day before in a joint press release with CEO Alexander Wehrle: that the disagreements about the commitment of the ex-stars Christian Gentner, Sami Khedira and Philipp Lahm had been resolved.

The sports director reported that he had already had a two-and-a-half-hour conversation with world champion Khedira. “We live a clear culture in the club, other opinions are always welcome,” he emphasized, having no problem with other combatants. This also applies to Gentner, who, as head of the licensed player department, is to work closely with Mislintat in the future. The fact that talks about extending his contract – his working paper ends in 2023 – was postponed by two months “is good for the club”, he said. “Then there is no football and we can sit down in peace, talk to each other properly and find a solution.”

“It would be good for VfB if we could just concentrate on football”

He confirmed that he wanted to continue working for VfB in the future. Provided the conditions are right. What had happened in the last four days had been “finally cleared up”, asserted the head of sport, who was alienated with the press conference and the presentation of the trio last Monday. For now, he would like to draw a line under the matter, because: “After the last three and a half years, it would be really good for VfB if we could just concentrate on football and results.”
