Employees of a rural health center in Pakistan’s Sindh province have beheaded a newborn baby and left it in the mother’s womb in a case of gross medical negligence, threatening the life of a 32-year-old Hindu woman.
The tragic incident prompted the Sindh government to set up a medical inquiry board to get to the bottom of the incident and trace the culprits.
The professor said, “The Bhil Hindu woman, who hails from a remote village in Tharparkar district, had earlier gone to a rural health center (RHC) in her area, but with no female gynecologist available, the inexperienced staff caused him a great deal of shock,” said the professor. Raheel Sikander, who heads the Gynecology Unit of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) in Jamshoro.
He said the RHC staff cut off the head of a newborn baby in the mother’s womb during the surgery on Sunday and left it inside.
When the woman faced a life-threatening condition, she was taken to the nearest hospital in Mithi, where there was no facility for her treatment. Eventually, her family brought her to LUMHS, where the rest of the newborn’s body was removed from the mother’s womb, saving her life, they said.
Sikandar said that the baby’s head was stuck inside and the mother’s uterus had ruptured and they had to open her abdomen and take out the head to save her life.
This horrific mistake prompted the Director General of Sindh Health Services, Dr Juman Bahoto, to order a separate inquiry into the matter.
He said inquiry committees would find out what happened, especially the absence of gynecologist and female staff at RHC in Chacharo.
The inquiry committees will also look into reports that the woman had to go through the trauma of taking a video of her lying on a stretcher.
“Apparently, some staff members took pictures of her on a mobile phone in the gynecology ward and shared those pictures with various WhatsApp groups,” Juman said.
