Dallas beat Florida in a shootout last week, but his track record on the road is far from home. Find out why we can’t trust them to win the rematch as we back Bobrovsky with our Stars vs. panthers.
There are only three games on the NHL betting board this Friday, starting with the Sunshine State game between the Dallas Stars and the Florida Panthers. Both of these teams have played very well since returning from the Christmas break, but the Panthers will be looking for a small rematch after losing in Dallas last Thursday.
Odds expect them to get it as the Panthers are a significant -208 home favorite at over/under 6.5 odds. Here are our best NHL Stars vs. Panthers free picks and predictions for Friday, January 14th.

Money line analysis
The Panthers are 6-1 in their last seven games and come off a 5-2 win over the Canucks on Monday night. Their only loss in that period was a 6-5 shootout loss to the Stars the previous week.
The Stars just picked up a 5-2 victory over the Kraken on Wednesday and 5-1 in their last six games. However, all of these victories were taken at home, which became a trend for them throughout the season. They’ve been spinning at home going 14-3-1 but floundering away where they’re just 4-10-1.
This is bad news against the Panthers, who are 19-3 at home and have the best overall scoring percentage in the NHL at .736. Florida is going through a year when goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky regains his position. He has a 17–3–3 record with a 2.55 GPA and a .919 save percentage.
But the biggest reason for the Panthers’ success is their brilliant offensive game with three lines to score and a pair of blueliners in Aaron Ekblad and Mackenzie Vigar to dribble the puck on the ice. Florida leads the league in 60-minute chances in 5-on-5 games and is second in 60-minute goals (3.39).
The Stars are only 25th in the league in GF/60 in 5-on-5 hockey (2.15), and that number drops to a league-worst 1.50 GF/60 in road play.
Despite playing in opposite conferences, these teams have met nine times in the last calendar year thanks to last season’s division realignment. Florida has won six of those nine clashes, although four of the last six have gone to overtime.
Florida have scored 38 goals in their last seven games and Dallas is struggling to create an attack on the road, so we support the home team. However, given Dallas’ strong defensive play and how close recent head-to-heads have been, it’s not easy for us to keep the Panthers on the puck line or three-way money line. We are leaning towards the Panthers on the money line but are looking elsewhere for betting opportunities.
Forecast: Panther money line (-208)
Covers NHL betting analysis.
The Panthers hit a whopping 3.92 goals per game and won the over in seven games in a row. However, we think that this trend may be broken tonight.
We mentioned that the Stars can’t score on the road and that decline is likely to continue tonight as Bobrovsky plays at a high level. The two-time Vezina Trophy winner came to town with huge expectations after a couple of disappointing seasons and boasts an impressive 0.927% SV in 14 home games this year.
However, the Stars have also made strong draw plays, and while veteran Braden Holty entered the league’s COVID protocols on Tuesday, 23-year-old Jake Oettinger may have been better. The 2017 first round pick is 9-2 with 2.20 GAA and .923 SV%, and two goals or less were allowed in eight of 11 starts. With the Stars going 5-13 on points in their last 18 games, Win Less tonight.
Forecast: Less than 6.5 (-120)
With the over/under odds set at a high 6.5, it seems like the bookmakers can only emphasize one side of the equation when setting totals: Florida’s performance.
But when you consider how pathetic the Stars have been on the road offensively, especially in their last four away games where they’ve only scored three goals, that figure seems too high.
Add to that the fact that the Stars actually play better defensively in away games (given a league-low 9.71 high danger chances per 60 minutes), along with Ettinger’s strong play between pipes, and under 6.5 looks like the best game ever.
To choose: Less than 6.5 (-120)
