Champion, Ill. ( Associated Press) — Ben Shelton beat August Holmgren of San Diego to give Florida a consecutive men’s singles national championship, and Texas’ Peyton Stearns won the women’s title with a straight-sets win over Stanford’s Connie Ma on Saturday. At Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Stearns, a sophomore and No. 2 seed, avenged one of only two season losses when he defeated Ma 6–3, 6–2. The unseeded freshman defeated Stearns 7-6 (7), 2-6, 6-2 as the Cardinals beat Texas 5-2 in February. Stearns, who dropped just one set out of 11 in the championship, finished her season 33-2, with her second loss against Virginia’s Emma Navarro as Texas — who won her second consecutive women’s team title last Sunday — defeated the Cavaliers. 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA team competition.
Stearns won the program’s first singles title and became the first Texas woman to reach the finals since 1995.
No. 2 Shelton defeated No. 6 Holmgren 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Gators became the first men’s tennis event since 2004–05, with individual competitors winning one title after another. Florida’s Sam Rifis defeated South Carolina’s Daniel Rodrigues 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to win the 2021 title.
Cleave Harper and Richard Ciamara of Texas defeated Matej Vosel and Robert Cash of Ohio State 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 in the men’s doubles championship.
NC State top seeds Jada Daniels and Nell Miller beat Miami’s Davenia Achong and Eden Richardson 6-2, 7-5 to win Wolfpack’s first women’s doubles title.
