Two Renault factories in the Spanish region of Castile and Leon will be temporarily shut down. One of the factories will close entirely on Saturday, while the other is forced to cancel multi-day shifts this week and next.

“They stopped production for 15 days in February. The shortage of supply could mean more stoppages at any time,” said a Stellantis union representative.

As you will have understood, the end of the shortage of semiconductors is far from over… Already at the end of August, contrary to what the “announcements” of Renault and Stellantis had suggested, stating that the start of the school year in September 2022 turned out to be less “complicated” than the end of summer 2021, things quickly appeared less idyllic… Stellantis confirming only a few days later that production at the Sochaux plant would be suspended for a while. The shortage of semiconductors being cited as the reason for the interruption.

In January and June 2022, the multiple production stoppages observed at the Stellantis plant in Vigo cut production by 50,000 vehicles. To meet demand, and try to make up for the huge backlog caused by the shortage of semiconductors, the factory management had considered last June to reopen the weekend and holiday shifts, which had been closed in March and October 2021, for lack of chips. This reopening was to allow the hiring of 1,400 employees, 700 per team, from the beginning of next October…

to summarize

Stellantis and Renault will partially halt production at their Spanish factories. The shortage of chips persists.
