Stephen will not play in US World Cup preparation matches, Johnson said

CHICAGO ( Associated Press) — Manchester City’s Zack Stephens will miss four of the United States’ World Cup prep matches next month, the team said for family reasons, and was replaced on the roster by DC’s Sean Johnson on Friday.

Stephen, 27, was considered the top American goalkeeper to go into qualifying last September, but was sidelined several times with a back injury and started six of 14 qualifiers. New England’s Matt Turner, who joined Arsenal in July, made eight starts.

Stephen has 29 international appearances.

He played just nine matches this season for Manchester City, where he is Ederson’s backup. He has appeared in four FA Cups, two League Cups, one Champions League and just one Premier League game with the Community Shield.

Johnson, 32, joins the roster along with Turner and Nottingham Forest’s Ethan Horvath. Johnson made his US debut in 2011 and made nine international appearances.

Forrest will face Huddersfield in the League Championship promotion playoff final on Sunday for a place in next season’s Premier League.

The US plays in exhibitions against Morocco in Cincinnati on Wednesday and Uruguay in Kansas City, Kansas on June 5, then the CONCACAF Nations League match against Grenada in Austin, Texas on June 10, and four days later in El Salvador .

The Americans have two more World Cup preparation matches to go after a pair of friendships in Europe in September. They will make their World Cup debut in Qatar on 21 November against Wales, Scotland or Ukraine. They play England four days later and play a close group match against Iran on 29 November.
