Steve’s hearing loss in “It’s That Easy” is inspired by the actor who plays him

The creative team behind the revival of HBO Max’s Sex and the City has made a special effort to reflect the realities of aging. For actor David Eigenberg, this is an example of art imitating life.

Julie Rottenberg and Eliza Zuricki, two writers on the HBO Max series And Just Like That, told Vanity Fair this week that they included Eigenberg’s real-life experience with hearing loss in his character, Steve Brady. In the show’s premiere episode of “Hi, It’s Me,” Steve explains that he recently got hearing aids – the storyline was further developed in the seventh episode of “Sex and the Widow,” which aired this week.

“When [showrunner] Michael Patrick [King] When he contacted David Eigenberg again about the show, the first thing David said was, “I have hearing aids.” It was literally what he led, ”Zuritsky explained.

“Everyone on the show, every person loves David Eigenberg as a person,” she continued. “We love him as an actor. We love Steve. We’re really interested in him being Steve. He’s so full of life and the Steves are the good guys.”

Compared to the original “Sex and the City”, Steve’s presence in “And Just Like That” has been greatly reduced as his wife Miranda Hobbs (played by Cynthia Nixon) explores her sexuality and shows signs of alcoholism.

While Steve has fared better on the new series than any other beloved male character so far, his lack of screen time has not gone unnoticed. fans and critics. In an article for The Cut earlier this week, journalist Danielle Cohen argued that the show’s writers “[do] not overly interested in learning how this very kind and patient young Steve has matured”, later stating, “This is not the life Steve deserves!”

In her conversation with Vanity Fair, Rottenberg suggested that Miranda’s journey in the series – at least as far as her relationship with Steve is concerned – is meant to be “re-evaluated and transitioned in life.”

“Adult couples are breaking up and people are coming to the revelations about what their spouses do or don’t do for them,” she said. “Miranda’s story was very representative of a certain path that many women found themselves on.”

“Even loved ones have crises,” Zuritsky added. “Even moral, generally admirable people make choices that are not necessarily worthy of admiration or virtue. But they do them anyway because they are going through something or going through a crisis.”
