Georgia residents who received an extension to file their 2022 income tax returns have nine days to do so and can receive a refund of up to $500 dollars.
Most people who live in the state file their taxes by the normal due date, which is in April, and then get their tax payment shortly after.
However, those in Georgia who were affected by severe storms earlier this year were given the opportunity to file their taxes until October 16.
These taxpayers who got the extension will receive their refunds once they file their 2022 tax returns.
Taxpayers must have filed their income tax returns for 2021 and 2022 to be eligible for the refund.
“Georgia is once again in a position to issue excess tax refunds thanks to years of responsible, conservative budgeting and because we chose to protect lives and livelihoods during the pandemic,” said Gov. . Brian Kemp, according to the Washington Examiner.
“While failed policies coming out of Washington, DC, are pushing us closer to a recession and forcing Georgia workers to suffer high inflation, we, at the state level, are doing what we can do to put the money back where it belongs. It belongs: in the hands of the taxpayers,” he added.
The payment amounts sent to taxpayers depend on their filing status.
For single taxpayers, the refund can be up to $250 dollars and for heads of family, up to $375.
On the other hand, joint filers will receive a refund of up to $500.
