Studies highlight the effects of gas stoves on health

Most homes in the United States still use a gas stove or stove.

However, a recent study shows that these devices can be harmful to health even if the burners are not lit.

These figures show that gas stoves fill homes with nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and particulates.

On the eve of New Year’s celebrations, Los Angeles County health officials have warned of a possible increase in respiratory diseases such as COVID-19.

“There are studies that have shown that for Latino households, in particular, it is a particular risk because they are the households that live in the pollution corridors,” said Teresa Borden, spokeswoman for the Energy Foundation.

One such study states that approximately 13% of childhood asthma in the United States can be attributed to contamination from gas stoves.

Borden said, “We’re asking the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to do more study and look into this for potentially sensible regulation so families know what they can do and how it’s done for their children.” May go.”

A 2013 analysis also showed that children living in homes with a gas stove were 42% more likely to develop asthma symptoms and 24% more likely to develop asthma than those living in homes without gas. There is more.

Health effects

María de la Paz Padilla has faced effects on her health, as has her son as they both suffer from asthma.

Padilla suffered from asthma since childhood but it was controlled but he is suffering from it again. His son has been suffering from this disease since the age of two.

Los Angeles is one of the most polluted cities in the United States, according to a new report by the American Lung Association (ALA).

“I didn’t know how much pollutant it emitted because you’re always taking care of outdoor contamination,” says Paz.

“I was taking care of myself outside and inside the house was my enemy,” said Paz, referring to the pollution caused by gas cookers.

The homemakers also highlight the importance of learning about these kitchen influences.

While we stay at home to prevent the coronavirus, it is extremely important to stay active and above all to strengthen our lungs, that’s why Fernanda Rocha, a fitness expert, teaches us how to practice this new technique called Zynga.

“It is very important that we, as a community, learn about these risks that we have inside our homes.”

What can people do with a gas stove?

Borden points out that people can install a vent hood on a gas cooktop to remove those contaminants. If you use a gas stove, it is better to use the back burner.

He also recommends the use of electric kettles or electric stoves, which can be purchased with one or two burners.

“Those are things that can help the person, as long as there’s an exposure, they can reduce it,” Borden said.

Doctors saw lung damage in both patients who had symptoms and those who did not.

Consumer Support Measures

Consumer advocates recommend that the CPSC take the following actions:

  • Enforce mandatory performance standards for new gas ranges and range hoods that reduce exposure by increasing ventilation and/or alerting users to dangerous concentrations of contaminants;
  • It is necessary to put a warning label on the gas stove;
  • Create accessible public education materials on gas stove emissions and effective methods to reduce or eliminate them.
