Study says continents were formed by giant meteorites that hit Earth

Nation World News To date, Earth is the only planet to have continents.

However, exactly how this continent formed and developed is still unclear. And now a new study claims that the continents on Earth happened because a giant meteorite hit the planet.

as quoted from independent, Thursday (11/8/2022) Earth has been bombarded with a range of extraterrestrial objects in its first billion years, according to the study. The event helped determine the shape of the land.

Previously, researchers had long suspected that such a collision formed Earth’s continents. However, no evidence was ever found.

To the end, researchers are now examining ancient meteorites and exploring the role of these extraterrestrial bodies in our planet’s history.

“By examining tiny crystals of the mineral zircon in rocks found in the Pilbara Craton in Australia, we found evidence of this massive meteorite impact,” said Tim Johnson of Curtin University.

The Pilbara Craton is a fragment of the Earth’s crust, which has been stable for more than a billion years and is well preserved today.

The researchers then studied the structure of oxygen isotopes in zircon crystals and uncovered the to bottom‘ which begins with the melting of rock near the surface and progresses to the depths.

This is consistent with the geological effects of giant meteorite impacts.

“Our research provides strong evidence, first of all, that the processes that eventually formed the continents came about from the impact of a giant meteorite. Not what happened with the extinction of the dinosaurs, but billions of years ago,” Johnson said.

The formation of this continent became important. This is because Earth’s land has become home to almost all the biomass, human and vital minerals on this planet.

“The continent is also where we find important metals like lithium, lead and nickel,” Johnson said.

The study explaining the impact of this giant meteorite was later published in the journal Nature.
