PITTSBURGH ( Associated Press) — Jack Suwinsky hit his third homer of the game in the ninth inning to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 4-3 win over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Suwinsky is the first rookie to cap a three-homer game with a game-ending shot.
He drove a slider to the right from side-arming Tyler Rogers (0-3) for his second game-ending home run of the season after connecting for a June 4 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“I was like, ‘Not at all, man. There’s no way out,'” Suwinsky said. “It’s hard to hit that guy. Coming from that low, it’s not easy to bat.”
Pirates manager Derek Shelton spoke with Suwinsky at the bottom of the eighth, asking if he was ready to go deeper for the third time. Shelton said he was told, “No.”
“I was trying not to think about it,” Suwinsky said. “You start trying to do too much and then you blow it up or whatever. I was just trying not to think about it and just trying to focus on the pitcher.”
Suwinsky is the second Pirate to kill three homers in one game, joining Andrew McCutchen (August 1, 2009). Josh Bell was the last player to hit three in a game for Pittsburgh on July 1, 2019.
Suwinsky, 23, took deep from starter Alex Cobb for a single shot in the fourth and Sam Long in the sixth before doing so for a 3-2 lead. He has scored 11 home runs in 47 matches this season, which is tied with Brian Reynolds for the team lead.
Thyro Estrada drew Pittsburgh closer to David Bedner, who climbed into the top of the ninth, tying the game at 3. Bednar (3-1) was working in his second innings of relief and dismissed two of the last three batsmen to finish ninth.
Mitch Keller dropped two runs (one earned) on three hits with four strikeouts in six innings for the Pirates, allowing his starting streak to be four with fewer than three runs. He has conceded eight runs in 28 1/3 innings (2.54 ERA) in his last six matches (four starts).
“It’s good for sure, but tomorrow you have to flush it like nothing happened,” Keller said. “You have to keep going. That’s my mindset. … Just keep a good routine and keep going.”
Cobb conceded two runs in four innings on his return from a 15-day injury list with a neck strain.
“I think he was solid after a long layoff,” said Giants manager Gabe Kapler. “First and foremost, he came out healthy. I know he wouldn’t be happy not to come out of the game with an edge, but our pitch counted for him. ,
After an error and two walks loaded the base for San Francisco without an outside in first, Jock Pedersen dribbled a two-run single behind Hoy Park at second base.
Park went yards on a sinker in the right-central field from Cobb in third, cutting it 2–1 with his first home run of the season as Suwinsky’s first homer went one innings later.
“Sometimes you just have to tip your hat,” Cobb said. “It was a bad pitch (for Suwinsky). But this is his day. Sometimes the story is about a boy. It was his impressive game.”
third time charm
Suwinsky is the eighth player since 2000 to score three home runs in a game, including a walk-off. He joins Brendan Rodgers (June 1, 2022), Eddie Rosario (June 3, 2018), Manny Machado (August 18, 2017), Khris Davis (May 17, 2016), Joey Votto (May 13, 2012), Albert Pujols Have become.
