Sweden sentences two brothers for spying for Russia

COPENHAGEN, Denmark ( Associated Press) — Two Swedish brothers of Iranian descent received lengthy prison sentences Thursday for spying for Russia and its GRU military intelligence service for a decade, in the most serious espionage case the Scandinavian country has seen in decades. Is. ,

The elder of the two naturalized Swedes, Payman Kia, was sentenced to life imprisonment and his brother Pym Kia to nine years and 10 months. He replied to the Stockholm District Court to hand over the information to Russia between September 28, 2011 and September 20, 2021.

Life imprisonment in Sweden usually means a minimum of 20 to 25 years. Anton Strand, Peiman Kia’s lawyer, said his client would appeal the sentence, while Björn Sandin, a lawyer for the younger brother, said he had not yet decided whether to do so.

“It is determined beyond a reasonable doubt that the brothers, together and in consultation, without authorization and for the benefit of Russia and the GRU, acquired, forwarded and disclosed information” to a foreign power for the purpose of harming its security to Sweden, says the verdict.

The Stockholm District Court stated that Pymmen Kia was “the driving force behind their joint crime”, while Pym Kia’s involvement was “relatively minor”.

The older brother was “fully aware of the harmful effects: he received, sent and disclosed information to Russia, which poses the greatest threat to Sweden’s security,” the court wrote in the basis of the life sentence.

“After the evaluation of the evidence by the district court, it is clear that some pieces of the puzzle are missing and therefore it has not been possible to be absolutely certain what happened,” said the court’s presiding judge, Mans Vigen. But “the picture of what happened is clear enough to hold the defendants accountable,” Vigen said. His motivation was money.
