Switzerland will soon have a new lake

Zanfleuron Glacier Has Melted Too Much

There will soon be a new lake in Switzerland – and it should stay!

Two glaciers in the canton of Vaud, Scheaks Rouge and Zanfluron, have retreated sharply and exposed a pass. A new lake will probably also be formed in ten years.

In 2012 the snow here was 15 meters thick, today it has almost completely melted. Glacier 3000 reported on Thursday that two glaciers, Scheaks Rouge and Zanflareon, have reduced their thickness by three times this year compared to the average of the past ten summers. The pass will be completely snow free by the end of September.

The Zanfluron Pass, buried in glacial ice for more than 2000 years, has now reopened in the region due to massive glacial melting. But Switzerland has not only received a new passport – in ten to 15 years, possibly a natural lake will form on the site of the glacier, the depth of which is likely to be about ten meters and the volume to 250,000 cubic meters.
