Taiwan will never forget the repression of China in Tiananmen, says the president

TAIPEI – Taiwan’s people will not forget the bloody repression of China against pro-democracy protesters in and around Tiananmen Square 32 years ago, and they will stick to their faith in democracy, President Tsai Ing-wen said on Friday.

Taiwan criticizes China and insists on doing what it did, to Beijing’s repeated annoyance. China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has threatened to take it by force.

Friday marks 32 years since Chinese troops opened fire to end the unrest in and around the square. Chinese authorities are banning any public commemoration of the event on the continent.

Tsai wrote on her Facebook page saying Taiwan’s people will not forget what happened.

“I believe that for all Taiwanese who are proud of their freedom and democracy, they will never forget this day and that they will remain steadfast through challenges to their faith,” she said.

“We will also not forget the young people who sacrificed themselves on this day in Tiananmen Square 32 years ago, and those year after year friends in Hong Kong who always mourn June 4 with candlelight.”

Tsai pointed out that the applicability of Friday on the same day is that 1.2 million COVID-19 vaccines will come from Japan as a government donation.

“We are grateful for the timely help of partners who also uphold the values of freedom and democracy, so that democratic Taiwan has more confidence in democracy.”

The Taiwan mainland council on China on Thursday called on China to return power to the people and embark on real political reform, rather than avoid repression.
