Talon beat the Rays 2-0 for fourth straight win over Yankees

scheduled tribe. Petersburg, Fla. ( Associated Press) — Jameson Talion hit two balls in eight innings after Nestor Cortés gave the Yankees their longest straight start in nine years and led New York 2-0 over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.

Gleber Torres put the Yankees ahead with a homer from Jeffrey Springs (2-2) in their second game with New York and Matt Carpenter in the fourth game, going home later in the innings.

New York opened a 6 1/2-game lead over the Rays by winning the first two games of the four-match series. The Yankees won their fourth straight after a season-worst three-game losing streak and improved to 33–13, their best start in the major leagues since the 2001 Seattle Mariners opened 34–12.

Talon (5–1) improved to 5–0 with a 2.20 ERA in his last seven starts, throwing 62 of 93 pitches for five strikes and strikes with no runs. The 30-year-old right-hander had not been dismissed in the eighth inning for Pittsburgh in Colorado since August 7, 2018, when he played his second major league full game.

Talon was sidelined from May 1, 2019 until the start of the 2021 season while recovering from his second Tommy John surgery.

Cortes played more than eight one-run balls as New York won the first match of the series 7-2 on Thursday. Yankees starters had not played eight innings in consecutive games since CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova against Kansas City on July 9 and 10, 2013.

Talon retired his first 12 batsmen in the fifth before a leadoff single from Randy Arrozarena. Manuel Margot extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a sixth inning double.

Clay Holmes scored two runs in a perfect ninth for his sixth defense in six occasions, bringing his unscored streak to 24 innings and ending the game in 2 hours, 23 minutes.

New York have had six shutouts, one shy of big league highs.

Torres took a fourth-place lead with his eighth homer, one shy of his total for the previous season. A later carpenter hit the first big league home run since April 30 last year.

Carpenter signed with the Yankees on Thursday and made his second straight start due to a separation from Aaron Hicks from a right hamstring tightness.

Springs made his second major league debut, conceding two runs and five hits in six innings. The 29-year-old left-hander had dropped a homer in 30 1/3 innings this year and was allowed to pair in the fourth.
