In a meeting held this morning by the president of the AFA, Claudio Tapia with the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino and the head of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, agreed to hold the 2023 Under 20 World Cup in Argentina.
It is worth mentioning that the World Cup event was supposed to take place in Indonesia, but due to political issues that eventually prevented it, FIFA decided to remove the constitution of the event.
For this reason, Chiqui Tapia quickly offered Argentina as a venue for a fundamental reason: to bid the country as a showpiece for the 2030 World Cup, along with Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay.
In addition, the U-20 team led by Javier Mascherano has already been eliminated in South America which played in Colombia last January and failed to qualify for the World Cup. Therefore, when it becomes a venue, it immediately obtains a classification.
As reported by the journalist Gastón Edul, in the coming days FIFA will make an official announcement about the change of venue, and more information will be known about the stadiums in which it will take place. The World Cup will start on May 20.
That happened to Indonesia
Israel’s qualification for the Under 20 World Cup was the kick-off for the competition: Indonesia requested that Israel be banned from the competition because the Asian country diplomatically supports the Palestinian cause. FIFA did not receive that request and therefore made a decision to remove the order of the event from Indonesia.
“After today’s meeting between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and PSSI Eric Thohir, FIFA has decided to withdraw Indonesia as the host country of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. 2023 due to the current circumstances,” the agency reported.
And he added: “FIFA wants to confirm that, although the decision has been accepted, it remains the committed support of PSSI, in close cooperation with the Government of President Widodo, as a process of national football transformation after the tragedy that occurred in October 2022. Members of different FIFA teams will remain in Indonesia in the coming months and PSSI will help as necessary under the leadership of President Thohir.
