Tattered Cover bookstore is opening its first location outside of Denver

Bookworms in Colorado Springs will have a new place to check out the latest titles next year, when the tattered cover book store opens a new location downtown.

New Bookstore 112 N. Tejon St. and will include a cafe, children’s area and more, the company announced this week. The location, which is expected to open in early 2022, is its first outside the Denver area and seventh after a new store in Westminster, which is expected to open this fall.

CEO Kwame Spearman said in a statement that the tattered cover hoped to fill the gap left by Chinook Bookshop, an independent bookstore in Springs that closed in 2004.

“Colorado Springs has always been a vibrant community full of book lovers,” Spearman said. “We’re setting up shop in a beautiful building that was built in the 1880s and has been preserved over the years, but has only recently been brought back. That’s exactly what we’re trying to do for our brand. , making it the perfect location for our first stay in southern Colorado.

This expansion comes during the 50th year in the business of change of ownership and tattered cover. In December, the chain was sold to local investors after its toughest year in memory. At the time, Spearman, who was in his role as CEO, admitted that “the notion of buying a bookstore in the middle of a pandemic was the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.”

Since then, Tattered Covers has opened a new flagship location on McGregor Square in Denver, near the Colorado Rockies ballpark. It recently debuted a pop-up shop at Park Meadows Mall in Lone Tree that will be open during the holiday season.
