Teams combine for 9 turnovers; Dolphins beat Texas 17-9. defeated by

Miami Gardens, Fla. (AP) — In the NFL’s highest turnover-filled game in more than five seasons, the Miami Dolphins got 244 yards and a touchdown throw from surprise starter Jacoby Brissett on his way to defeat the Houston Texans 17-9. on Sunday

The game between the two teams that entered with a 1-7 record and both lived up to – or below – their billing on a seven-game losing streak.

The Dolphins and Texans combined for nine turnovers. Five in Miami, four in Houston, and somehow the Dolphins (2-7) won anyway.

It was Miami’s first win since October 18, 1990, with at least five turnovers. Since then the Dolphins were leading 0-21 in such games. And it had the highest turnover in an NFL game since the New York Jets and Kansas City also combined for nine on September 25, 2016.

Brissette refilled for Tua Tagovailoa, who had missed the game with a finger injury on his throwing arm. Tagovailoa was limited in practice during the week, although Dolphins coach Brian Flores said on Friday he was optimistic the second-year QB would be able to play.

Jalen Waddle caught eight passes for 83 yards for Miami, including a touchdown run from Miles Gaskin and a scoring catch from Mack Hollins.

Kaimi Fairbairn had three field goals for Houston (1-8). Texans quarterback Tyrod Taylor returned after missing most of the season with a hamstring injury and was far from fast.

Taylor completed 24 of 43 passes for 240 yards, including three interceptions. After 10 touchdowns in the last 167 throws against the Dolphins and entering the game without a hitch, it went down to a 42.8 rating.

Tagovailoa was active as Miami’s emergency quarterback, but basically disappeared for his fifth game of the season. Brissette has started four games and played all but two of Miami’s Week 2 matchup against Buffalo, when Tagovailoa left with fractured ribs.

Gaskins went for 6 straight yards for the opening touchdown of the game, making Miami 7–0 up and 4:41 left in the opening quarter.

The Dolphins scored a total of 10 points in 119 first-half minutes at home this season, before a flurry at the end of the second quarter doubled that total – and sent them into the break to lead 17-6 .

Jason Sanders’ 42-yard field goal put the Dolphins 10-6 with 1:12 remaining, and then Taylor gave Miami a short field with a careless interception. He was scrambling to his left, Houston approached the edge and apparently felt he was throwing the ball away.

Instead, he injured Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker to flip the ball, which just happened to be on the same side. As the ball came his way, he got two tippy-toe feet down like a receiver, and Miami was in business again at the Houston 26.

It took four plays for Brissette to capitalize on that gift, including a sliding Hollins with a 5-yard scoring throw and home to Miami’s biggest halftime lead in just over a year—28-10 on the break of the Los Angeles Rams. Since the increase on November 1, 2020.

Texans: RB Scotty Phillips (leg) goes through in the first half and doesn’t return.

Dolphins: c Greg Mainz (ankle) was lost in the first quarter, then was downgraded at halftime. Durham Smith also lost time with an eye injury.

not half bad

The Dolphins’ 17-6 halftime lead against the Los Angeles Chargers was their first at the middle of a home game since November 15, 2020. They have since fallen behind at the break for six consecutive matches at Hard Rock Stadium. It was the longest streak by the Dolphins at their current stadium, which they have called home since 1987.

Texans: On vacation next week, then go to Tennessee on November 21st.

Dolphins: Host Baltimore on Thursday nights. It will be Miami’s first Thursday home game since 2014.
