Teenage driver who bumped into cyclists while “coal rolled” on them, charged with felony in Texas

On Monday, Waller County, Texas, officials announced a felony charge against a 16-year-old pickup truck driver accused of crashing into a group of cyclists while trying to blow exhaust fumes. As a result of the collision, four cyclists were taken to hospital.

The Waller County District Attorney said his office filed six charges of aggravated assault and lethal weapons against the driver, one for each biker hit by a truck, culminating in a week-long investigation into the incident. The driver voluntarily surrendered and will remain in custody pending the decision of the juvenile court.

On September 25, a group of cyclists were preparing for a triathlon when the driver started taunting them, the bikers said, cranking the engine to spew exhaust fumes at them, called “rolling coal.” When the driver accelerated to reach another group of bikers, he hit six of the eight people riding on it, causing four cyclists to be hospitalized and three seriously injured.

Chase Ferrell, one of the cyclists behind the group of wounded, told the Houston Chronicle that the driver got out of the car and asked if he was going to go to jail.

“You did something damn stupid,” Ferrell recalled in an interview with The Chronicle, adding, “You should go to jail.”

However, the driver was not arrested and his parents showed up shortly after the accident. The police arrived and let the teen go home without any quotes, which caused an uproar in the cycling community of Houston, The Washington Post notes.

The driver’s legal representative told Chronicle that juvenile privacy laws do not allow for comment, but said, “My client and his family continue to pray for a speedy recovery for injured bikers.”

Officials said they appreciated the victims’ patience while investigators analyzed the evidence.

“We wish them a speedy recovery on their long journey and remind everyone to share roads, follow traffic rules and treat each other with the respect we all deserve,” the district attorney said.
