Teenager Rune eliminates Tsitsipas and goes to 4th in France

PARIS ( Associated Press) — Teenager Holger Rune caused an upset Monday by knocking out the 2021 French Open runner-up and current fourth-seeded runner-up in the fourth round of the French Open.

In his Roland Garros debut, Rune, a 19-year-old Dane, beat Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

World-ranked 40 Rune had never won a Grand Slam match until last week, arriving in France 0-2 in previous appearances at tennis’ four major tournaments.

Tsitsipas is the first member of the top eight seeds to be eliminated from the men’s draw.

The Dane now joins sixth-seeded Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz to make this the first Grand Slam tournament with two teenagers in the men’s quarterfinals since Hendrik Dreekmann and Andrei Medvedev did it at the 1994 French Open.

Rune had some trouble securing the win against Tsitsipas after leading 5-2 in the fourth set. The teenager lost nine points in a row and his lead was cut to 5-4. He then needed to save three break points before scoring the biggest win of his career.

Rune will face Casper Ruud, who advanced to the Grand Slam quarterfinals for the first time in his career by beating Hubert Hurkacz 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Ruud, seeded eighth, is the first Norwegian man to reach the top eight round at the French Open.

On the women’s side, Daria Kasatkina matched her best performance at a major by reaching the French Open quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Italy’s Camila Giorgi.

Kasatkina, seeded 20th, saved a break point while serving for the match and secured it with successive unforced errors from Giorgi.

The 25-year-old Russian will face her compatriot Veronika Kudermetova in the next round.

Kudermetova reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, defeating American Madison Keys 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
