Ukrainians want the “best battle tank in the world” and are publicly pressuring the German government. Even the United States – it seems – would have no problem with delivery or even encouragement behind the scenes. What is the military role of steel giants?
The Ukrainian government wants to make its armed forces more vocal to counterattack with Western-style battle tanks. If Kyiv’s demands are met, the self-propelled howitzers and several rocket launchers that have already been delivered from Germany and have a wide range of effects will now be complemented by battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
The Focus of Desire is the Leopard 2 A4 main battle tank, available only in this older, but still widely used, version. This also applied to the Marder infantry fighting vehicle, actually a discontinued model in the German Army.
cooperation of two types of armor
Military experts pointed to the central role played by the interaction of the two tank types in the recapture of occupied territories and fighting in urban areas. Four soldiers are the crew of Leopard 2, of which they fight only “mounted”, i.e. by vehicle: driver, gunner, loader and commander.
With superior firepower and its fire control system, the Leopard is “capable of dueling” even in direct confrontation with the enemy. “The armed forces of 18 countries are confident in the leopard’s all-round superiority,” writes producer KMW. The Leopard 2 was often called “the world’s best battle tank”, regardless of the manufacturer’s pride in engineering.
Leopards are used with armored personnel carriers, in which Panzergrenadiers sit in a rear room and fight “dismounted”, i.e. leave the armored vehicle through the tailgate and with rifle or rocket-propelled grenades. face the battle. They also wield their own steel giants to prevent sneaking enemy tank destroyer squads.
Superior Large 120mm Gun
The German Defense Ministry said, “The Battle of Ukraine is not only fought by armored units, but lets the top armored instructor have their say in a “#demand” format. Brigadier General Björn Schulz, commander of the Bundeswehr Armored Forces School, says, Armored troops are characterized by “high mobility, high maneuverability” in spite of chains and in the most difficult terrain.
Schultz: “Open area or a built-up area, urban space, with debris lying all around, destroyed cars and the like. We can still develop maximum speed and speed.” At the same time, the tank offers a lot of protection. The Leopard also scores with its better big 120mm gun. Impact power, assertiveness through firepower as well as security is the essence of the mission.
Skills will become more important for Ukrainians at the stage of reconquest of the territories that have now begun. These defended efficiently and deprived the attacking Russians of opportunities to hit from the air and over long distances, the general says. The loss for the Russian side would be huge. So it is becoming more and more direct.
American statements are taken as incentives
It is expected that a battle will be fought in densely populated areas and a decision will be taken. “When we talk about war in Europe it is incomprehensible that we can live outside urban area during war. All over Europe there are houses, industrial areas, villages, small towns, megacities. War usually There are fixed ones, ”says the general.
«There is major infrastructure, there are government institutions, there are power plants. I need bridges, I need some roads. I just can’t ignore it. So I have to fight there with maximum protection for the civilian population.”
According to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Germany has already provided Ukraine with long-range, accurate and therefore critical weapons systems, which are now being used successfully. He refuses to go it alone, but there is also repeated talk of a German “leadership role”.
Statements from the United States and NATO were interpreted as an incentive to deliver more weapons systems to Berlin. But it is also true that no country has yet given Ukraine Western main battle tanks.
“Germany must advance in Europe”
“There are no longer valid arguments for not supporting Ukraine and denying them heavy weapons,” Marie-Agnes Strach-Zimmermann, chair of the defense committee in the German parliament, told the DPA on Thursday.
«The Ukrainian army has shown impressively that it is able to adapt very quickly to Western military equipment. We have to pay attention to that and act accordingly,” says Strach-Zimmerman.
“As Free Democrats, we clearly do not share the line of the German Defense Ministry – the Bundeswehr has given everything that is possible,” she says. Despite the dire situation in Ukraine, Germany, like no other Western country, is focused on “somehow fulfilling all NATO obligations, even if at the expense of Ukraine”.
Strach-Zimmermann: “Germany must lead Europe. It is not alone or lack of coordination, that is what allies want. Anyone who interprets this desire differently, misses out on reality.»
