Title: Senior Human Resources Manager Miami Dolphins

Age: 58

Experience

Before joining the Dolphins in 2019, McKenzie spent seven seasons as general manager of the Oakland Raiders. He was named Sporting News and PFWA Executive of the Year in 2016 after a 12-4 playoff season in which seven players made the Pro Bowl.

It was the Raiders’ only winning season of his seven, with his teams going 40–72.

Among the players he drafted were Khalil Mak, Derek Carr, Amari Cooper and Latavius Murray.

Prior to joining the Raiders, McKenzie spent 18 years with the Green Bay Packers as a professional staff assistant, director of professional staff and director of football operations. During this time, the Packers won two Super Bowls.

You must know

McKenzie was an NFL linebacker who played 60 games in five seasons with the Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers from 1985 to 1992. He played college in Tennessee.

Chicago connection

In 2014, McKenzie selected current Bears without linebacker Khalil Mak fifth overall.

In 2018, after coach John Gruden was hired and renewal negotiations between the Raiders and Mack stalled, the team traded Mack, a second-round pick and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2020 to the Bears. The Raiders received two first, third and sixth round picks over the next two seasons. The Bears then extended Mack for six years.

Mack was named a pro bowler in each of the next three seasons with the Bears, but missed 10 games this year with an injury.

What was said

Before McKenzie was fired in December 2018, Raiders owner Mark Davis spoke to ESPN about issues with the Raiders’ roster.

“It was all part of the evolution, but I think it’s becoming clearer and clearer to John (Gurden) that the talent just isn’t there right now,” Davis said. “Drafts didn’t help complement what we were doing in the free agency market. If you look at our list now, it’s a bunch of free agents, one-year-old guys who are mercenaries. And they’re great guys, and they’re raiders. Once a raider, always a raider… but we just don’t have the talent that a team of 22 has.”

Before the Raiders hired McKenzie in 2012, former Packers executive Ron Wolf told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, “Reggie is a great rater. He can tell you who can play and who can’t play. That’s what it’s all about. Some can write reports but can’t tell you who can play. Whatever it is, he has it. He has a feeling.”
