Detroit ( Associated Press) – The family of Patrick Leoia, who was killed by police in western Michigan, says an unarmed black man will be released Tuesday after an independent autopsy.
A video showing Leo being shot on the ground during an April 4 fight with a white Grand Rapids officer is being shared with government police and will not be released immediately.
Following the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., the 95-year-old forensic pathologist, Dr. Werner Spitz, and other high-profile investigators were involved. He is a former medical examiner in the Detroit area.
The death of Leo angered many who watched his family and the video of an officer colliding.
An unnamed officer was heard saying at a traffic stop that the license plate did not match the car. Leo refused to comply with the order, and a short chase ensued.
The last time the officer was on top of Leo was trying to help him. Leoia asked police to drop off Tazer, and he fired his shotgun.
The State Police will report the findings to the Kent County Attorney, taking into account any charges. Leoia is a refugee from the African Congo.
Leo’s funeral is scheduled for Friday at the Grand Rapids at Christ Renaissance Church. Rev. Al Sharpton said the National Action Network will help cover the cost. Thanks.
