The symbolic Doomsday Clock moves as 90 seconds to the Apocalypse
It was advanced ten seconds after the Ukrainian war, climate change and the pandemic
The modern clock is a symbolic clock created after World War II, which is usually the time until midnight, that is, until the end of civilization.
During the Cold War it was around 100 seconds, then dropped to 17 minutes in the 1990s and is now at a maximum of one minute, just 90 seconds from last time. As we say, it is a symbolic measure driven by the personal reasons of those who organize it.
During 2020 they reached 100 seconds, but now, due to the growing war in Ukraine, the climate crisis and the social crisis, they have reduced it to another ten seconds. This is undoubtedly a problem because, as someone jokingly pointed out on Twitter, the heavy metal group Iron Maiden will have to compose another song for ‘2 minutes to midnight’.
Although the reduction is concerned about common mortals, it has no scientific basis, even though everyone has been warned. Still, it’s hard to imagine that we’re worse off today than in 1962 or 1980, when nuclear bombs were literally dropping near Moscow and New York.
