The fleet of foreign fishing vessels is monitored by the Chilean Navy

Rapa Nui. In the constant work of the Navy to keep the waters of the jurisdiction safe, between September 5 and 7, the Oceanic Fisheries Control Operation (OFPO) “Mata Hui 3” was carried out, carried out by the P-3 “Orión” aircraft. ”, belongs to the VP-1 maritime aeroexploration group of Naval Aviation.

The tasks performed by this aircraft make it possible to monitor in real time the surface panorama above the marine park “Motu Motiro Hiva”, where it is possible to identify a fleet of 23 foreign fishing vessels which is 700 nautical miles east of Rapa Nui. That is, almost 1,300 kilometers to the continent from this island territory, but outside the Chilean Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

With 1,656,600 square miles explored and 19 hours of flight, the aircraft crew led by its Commander, Lieutenant Commander Michael Richter, is ready to perform this type of tasks that require high concentration and teamwork.

The plane

The P-3 “Orion” is an aircraft designed in the sixties by the American company Lockheed Martin and which, according to Captain Richter himself, has great versatility. “This is an aircraft that performs – in times of war – primarily anti-submarine warfare tasks and in peacetime aero-maritime exploration,” commented the Captain.

In this way, one of its most important attributes is the FLIR camera, designed to obtain high resolution, infrared images and heat zones. In OFPOs, this device allows the registration number to be recorded in the best quality possible or to see if there are people on deck, among other functions.

Second Corporal Valentina Godoy is part of the P-3 crew and belongs to the VP-1 squadron of Naval Aviation; His tasks as a navigator included, in his words, “compiling the surface panorama of the fishing fleet and then sending it to the Units operating with us.”

OFPO: a contribution to maritime security and interest

“Control and verify that the real surface panorama is consistent with the control we have at the national level in our databases,” is the description of OFPO “Mata Hui 3” by First Corporal Christian Muñoz, from the Department of Maritime Traffic Control . Directorate of Security and Maritime Operations of the Navy (DIRSOMAR); This is the main function that OFPOs have, along with the identification and reporting of vessels operating beyond the EEZ, in addition, they have the task of ensuring compliance with current agreements on the conservation of marine flora and fauna signed by the State of Chile.

Along these lines, the Commander in Chief of the Navy, Admiral Juan Andrés De la Maza, emphasized the importance of confirming what is seen through satellite positioning systems in the situation room of the General Directorate of Marine and Navy Territory Merchant (DIRECTEMAR) with where the aircraft can be observed in the same sea, which shows the existing commitment of the Maritime Authority to ensure the security of the EEZ.

In addition, Admiral De la Maza himself mentioned that the Navy “does all the institutional means available to the State to carry out the tasks traditionally corresponding to us according to the Mission Areas and especially the most important Area of the Mission that the Navy has which is Territorial Integrity. , that is, the security of our territory. All the institutional means, in their greatness, contribute to the fulfillment of other Areas of the Mission.”

Finally, it should be noted that the presence of the Chilean Navy in the jurisdictional waters reaffirms the capacity of being a State agency with high technological development that seeks to protect the areas of national interest, marine flora and fauna, and protection of human life at sea.
