Inflation was highest in August at 12.4%; while the gap between the gondola and the field widened. The producer received $1 for every $3.5 the consumer paid.
This report, prepared by the Argentine Confederation of Medium Enterprises (CAME), showed that the manufacturer’s participation in the price was 24.7%. The largest participation was among strawberry producers (60.8%) and the lowest was among lemon producers (9.1%).
It should be noted that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August was out and showed that the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages segment recorded the largest increase in the month. At this point, one of the things that was noticeable was the increase in vegetables and tubers.
Regarding the fruit and vegetable index, the CAME reported that the prices of the 19 types of fruit and vegetables increased fivefold in August. In the livestock sector, the consumer paid three times what the producer received.
Products with larger gaps
In this segment the lemon appears 11 times; the carrot at 8.9x; the zucchini with 8.6 times; the orange with 7.3 times and the onion with 7.2 times.
“For the fifth month in a row, lemon was the food with the widest gap between producers and consumers. Their prices increased by 6.7% at the destination while they increased by 20.3% at the origin, reflecting a slight price recovery after the drought,” CAME reported.
Products with smaller gaps
Eggs (2.1 times) and chicken (2.6 times) fall into this category. Eggs increased by 24.8% at origin and 29.7% at destination, chickens increased by 26.7% for producers and 23% for consumers.
Pepper and pumpkin, on the other hand, have increased at both ends of the chain: 31.6% and 2.8% at the origin and 102.3% and 4.2% at the destination, respectively. “In the particular case of pepper, the increase in producer prices is a response to an increase in the quality of production in Salta and a decrease in supply to the domestic market,” the report highlighted.
