For 18 months, politicians who faced riots during the riots at the US Capitol have downplayed its importance.

The Republican line that Thursday’s January 6 committee hearing was an “illegitimate” “sham” will not fly outside die-hard fanatics. Much was compelled to ignore the evidence of the committee.

But they’re probably right that it won’t affect the political fortunes of Democrats, with inflation assuming 8.6% in May and gas prices at $5 a gallon as of this fall.

“Is Nancy Pelosi going to a prime-time hearing on inflation?” Representative Steve Scalis of Louisiana, a member of the Republican leadership, said.

For 18 months, politicians who were scared during the riots have downplayed its importance. Weeks later, he refused to impeach Donald Trump for inciting the crowd, saying it was time to “move on.” As Trump held his ground to the party, those who dared to criticize the slightest bowed down to him.

He has called it a false flag, blamed it on Antifa infiltrators, and equated it to “left-wing violence” – that is, the vandalism that took place during some Black Lives Matter protests. He insisted it was “not a rebellion” and claimed the Biden administration is using it “to unleash state of national security against law-abiding American citizens, especially Trump voters.”

They have done everything but look it in the eye.

All the while, cancer grew in his heart: In polls, two-thirds of Republicans consistently say the 2020 election was stolen. Trump knew this was not true. His campaign manager and data guru told him so. Bill Barr, the former attorney general who brushed off Trump’s impediment to the Robert Mueller investigation, told him, “It was bullshit.”

But Trump fanned the flames anyway, aided by low-rent hangar-ons and a circle of grifters, as the “stolen” election became an article of faith in Republican politics. And here we are living in a political reality in which reality itself is defined by ideology and partisanship.

That’s why listening is necessary: so that we can remember what these bastards must have forgotten – the shock we felt at seeing a bunch of camo-clad bubbas breach the Capitol, the real-time beer hall putst There was terrifying fear.

Only now, do we better understand how coordinated the attack was, and the extent to which Trump was not only a passive spectator, but a conscientious participant.

I can’t help but wonder why Trump isn’t spending his days in federal prison, how he continues to be at the forefront of the 2024 Republican nomination.

In a speech just before the Capitol march, Trump told the Stop the Steel rally, “You’ll never take our country back with weakness. …Mike Pence, I hope you’re up for the good of our Constitution and Will stand up for the good of our country. And if you are not, I will be very disappointed with you.”

Trump, of course, wanted Pence to unilaterally declare him the winner—in other words, to launch a coup. Pence refused.

After learning that Pence was forced to flee the Capitol, Trump tweeted, “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our Constitution.” Told the rioters that he really wanted to hang Pence, Trump replied, “Maybe our supporters have the right idea.” Pence, he said, “deserves” it.

Digesting it all, I can’t help but wonder why Trump isn’t spending his days in federal prison, any less than how he remains the front-runner for the 2024 Republican nomination.

Perhaps that’s why Fox News acted as Trump’s defense team on Thursday, not to broadcast the hearing, but to allow Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity to spend two commercial-free hours, “rebooting” it, Drawing on the likes of Tulsi Gabbard and Darren Beatty – a Trump appointee who spent January 6, 2021, telling black people To know [their] Kneel before MAGA” – for doubting the election and spreading conspiratorial garbage.

Soon, the right-wing propaganda cesspool will return under the pretext of January 6. It never happened, or it happened a long time ago, but is no longer relevant. Also, “Look! The migrant caravan!”

There are a few reasons Democrats will (and they will) suppress this fall. First, the parties that come to power usually lose mid-term. Second, Democrats have an inherent disadvantage; He would have to win the national popular vote by four or five points to retain the House, and he would lose by two in the elections. Third, when inflation is on the rise, you don’t get over those unfavorable situations.

Nothing will change in these hearings. The immediate threat to the voters’ wallet will always outweigh the more intangible threat to democracy.

But while we need to acknowledge – right now – the fact that Americans are empowering the delegates who have adopted the Big Lie, or at least are lying behind it, doesn’t mean that January 6. The committee is useless. It is laying a historical marker and softening the ground for a possible – though unlikely – high-profile criminal trial.

No less important, it is building a runway for bipartisan legislation to deter a future coup attempt, making it clear that pre-Trump norms have always been held to be true: the loser has to make his way to the White House. Must not be able to make and threaten.

This is not the only election reform we need. But it is a start.
