TThe government has announced that fans will not be allowed access during Super League games, and it may be extended to European competitions.
The Greek government announced on Monday that all Greek Super League matches will be played behind closed doors until February 12, a move that comes after a series of heavy clashes between ultras and police in recent weeks.
“Athletes, fans, and citizens will not pay for the murderous behavior of criminal organizations and the sadistic tolerance of a small minority of fanatical fans,” said executive spokesman Pavlos Marinakis in a press conference.
The measure will also be imposed on the home games of second division teams belonging to Super League clubs, and, in addition, there is the possibility of extending it to European games played by Greek teams at home.
In fact, Marinakis noted that Olympiakos’ match with Serbian side Topola Backa for the Europa League group stage will be played behind closed doors.
These restrictions were adopted after, last Thursday, a group of Olympiakos fans clashed with the Greek police in Athens in a dispute that left an officer seriously injured and hit by a flare.
The authorities arrested an 18-year-old young man who admitted to launching the flare, while the agent was in critical condition in an ICU for the fourth consecutive day.
On the 3rd, Olympiakos fans clashed with police inside the Volos team’s stadium after their team’s goal was disallowed.
Marinakis spoke about an “extraordinary problem” of violence plaguing Greek society and noted that the government of the Prime Minister, conservative Kyriakos Mitsotakis, will make “dynamic interventions” to solve the problem.
The spokesman pointed out that in these two months, the teams of the Super League must install high-definition cameras and an electronic entry system with simultaneous control of the identification of fans.
“The results of the implementation of these measures will be evaluated,” said Marinakis, and she stressed that if the teams are not convinced that they can guarantee the safety of fans and footballers, the expansion of the measures will be considered.
