The Guardians make Ramirez’s 7-year, $141 million deal official

CLEVELAND ( Associated Press) — Jose Ramirez’s new contract is official. Their value to parents has not long been in dispute.

The All-Star third baseman – and one of baseball’s best all-round players – signed his seven-year, $141 million contract on Thursday, a day before Cleveland played his first home opener since changing his name last year .

Securing Ramirez for a long-term deal has been a priority for Cleveland’s front office, which hasn’t been able to close in on top-tier talent in the past. Ramirez wanted to end his career with the team that signed him as a teenager, and the side agreed to a deal last week.

“Jose has been an integral member of our organization and will continue to be a cornerstone of our club going forward,” said team president Chris Antoinetti. “Jose has established himself as one of the best players in the game, and beyond that, he is an incredible competitor and teammate.

“He exemplifies the characteristics and qualities we want to develop in our players, and he sets an admirable standard for others to strive for. We Jose show the depth of commitment we have to our team, the franchise and the city.” Thank you, and we look forward to building our future clubs around him.”

The Guardians have a news conference scheduled ahead of Friday’s home opener with Ramirez getting off to a great start.

He is batting .480 with three homers and leads the AL through six games with 12 hits, 14 RBIs and 26 total bases.
