With demand significantly outstripping supply, rental prices remain sky-high in South Florida, forcing people in cities like Hialeah to pay rent to live in RVs and boats parked in front of homes.
These days, it’s hard to find a block in Hialeah that doesn’t have an RV parked on it and residents paying rent, a situation the city is trying to control.
“We respect those who have a motorhome to go on vacation and also those who have a boat. All of that will be respected. “What we cannot allow is the illegal use of these mobile homes, that is, you cannot park them at home and use them as a kind of rental property,” said Mayor Esteban Bovo.
Bovo added that he does not currently believe there is a crisis due to this situation, but that they will have to deal with it.
“We have a social situation where, unfortunately, unless it’s an efficiency class or a shared room or an RV, there’s nothing here for $1,300,” said Ana María Londoño, a real estate agent in South Florida.
According to Mayor Bovo, the regulation on these recreational vehicles is being reviewed and includes the creation of a registry that reduces their dimensions from 33 to 24 feet and prohibits them from parking behind houses.
“Be careful, this is not just the case in Hialeah, I have seen it in Westchester, in the city of Miami and in Kendall, it is also seen in other parts where people are finding an alternative to housing,” the mayor added from Hialeah.
Ana María Londoño, real estate agent, pointed out that in Hialeah they not only use mobile homes for rent, but people also rent the boats parked in the houses for people to live there.
Another point of concern for the authorities is the question of security. They fear that parking these RVs in front of a home could create an obstacle for firefighters in an emergency.
The Hialeah Council will discuss the action to be taken on September 26th.
