Solar and other energy programs at Texas State Technical College (TSTC) are increasing in popularity, leading to an increase in enrollment. TSTC offers a variety of electrical programs and students like Diego Hernández take advantage of these opportunities. Hernandez, who is enrolled in TSTC’s electrical program, expressed his enthusiasm for the complexity of the job and the opportunity to exercise his mind.
The appeal of electrical work has attracted more students in recent years, resulting in a 50 percent increase in program enrollment since 2021. To accommodate this growth, TSTC has expanded its laboratory four times since 2019. According to instructor Darin Timmons, the growth of the program has been exciting, with a significant increase in the size of the teaching team to provide the best opportunities for students. TSTC offers the Triple Crown Program, which allows students to earn an associate degree in solar energy technology and certificates in electrical construction and energy efficiency. These graduates are entering a field that is in high demand.
Timmons highlights the importance of electrical work in our daily lives, explaining that regardless of the energy source (wind, hydro, solar, nuclear), ultimately everything is powered by two small wires. The stability and demand in this field make it an attractive career choice for aspiring electricians.
Student Brian Ervin initially had limited knowledge of the program but saw its potential. More than a year later, he is excited to be part of the program’s growth and finds it enjoyable and rewarding.
The increasing interest in solar and energy programs at TSTC demonstrates the growing importance of sustainable energy and the need for qualified professionals to contribute to the development of the industry.
