“According to the Sûreté du Québec, my life was in danger. I offered to change my life, to break all ties with my environment. I refused. I could not give up everything,” said Me Nicholas Daudelin recently, in his observations about the opinion of his two attackers.

Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Ndiaye, 43, and Daouda Dieng, 37, opened fire through the door of their home in Mont-Saint-Hilaire on March 26, 2020.

But at the last moment the 35-year-old threw himself behind the wall and was struck in the leg.

The attackers were initially convicted of attempted murder rather than setting fire.

The prosecution requested an “exemplary” sentence of 10 years in prison, which could go up to 12 years, given the specific context of the case.

Jean-Francois Malo and Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Ndiaye were filmed together unconsciously about a month after the crime.

According to what was presented in court, the co-defendants accepted the contract from Jean-Francois Malo, a real estate developer from Joliette. He had a discussion of several million dollars with Mouvement Desjardins, which was then represented by Mr. Daudelin.

  • Several hiding places

After the attack, the civilian said he hid with his wife in the “stashes” of the Witness Protection Program for about five months.

However, they had to move several times to different regions of Quebec because some of their relatives were receiving threatening calls.

A couple in their thirties even found themselves at one point, hiding in an old people’s residence.

“I’ve always thought that there was an exception in it, and this time it was not just an attempt, but really murder,” said the expert.

Despite the advice of the authorities, he returned home and his wife gave birth to their first child. However, drama haunted them.

“As quickly as possible [j’entends] I must hide the evening bell. Even after three years”, Me Daudelin Hall confided.

In his sequels, he reported a lack of concentration, confidence, insomnia, nightmares, and panic attacks.

He said he was “anesthetized” from moments of joy or despair. He called it “autopilot” instead.

    “to take down”

Me Daudelin also lamented the reasons which led to this attack.

“I cannot believe that in Quebec, in the state of law, someone can attack a judicial official. I was raised because I was exercising my role as a lawyer,” recalled the civilian.

“It’s like hunting ladies. I found it best to take off.”

The sentence for accomplices Dieng and Ndiaye will be delivered on May 15. Defense attorneys suggested sentences of 4 or 5 years. The file of Jean-Francois Malo, who will face a separate trial, must return to court this morning to assert his right to a publicly funded lawyer as part of the petition.
