The request of Honduras was sent to Judge Lorna Schofield, who sent the petition to the Government and established October 2, 2023 as the deadline for its response.
In May 2021, he was sentenced to 144 months in prison (12 years) after pleading guilty to two charges. The first, for his participation in a conspiracy to import 500 grams or more of cocaine into the United States.
The second time, he pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to use and carry a firearm during and in connection with drug trafficking.
Zelaya Romero should be released on February 5, 2026. However, on June 23, 2023, he submitted a request for Compassionate Release to the prison director of USP Yazoo City, located in Mississippi, which was denied.
