On Thursday, May 18, 2023, a majority of members of the United States Republican Party approved a bill on immigration. This project is the same which was introduced by the previous President Donald Trump.
It has now been coauthored by politicians Mario Díaz-Balart, from Florida, Tom McClinton, from California, and Congressman Kevin McCarthy. The initiative was supported by 219 people and 213 did not agree.
Republicans believe that President Joe Biden has been lenient in his handling of immigrants. It is for this reason that it has been decided to propose changes to immigration operations.
The document, titled HR 2, the Border Security Act of 2023, won’t go into effect for the time being, as Biden plans to veto it if it gets his hands on it. Nanette Barragán, chair of the Hispanic Caucus in Congress, declared that the plan was discriminatory and against national values. Mrs Barragán also said the program had not contributed to streamlining migrant flows across the Mexican border in the past.
Items included in the offer
The first content of the program is the resumption of work on the wall separating the United States from Mexico. Another issue is the placement of technical means in all border areas along the nation.
In addition, it is proposed to have more Border Patrol Officers (USBP) and provide them with increments. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) should review the illegal entry of immigrants into North American soil.
Laws of support for children migrating without responsible adults need to be evaluated. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) authorities will be supervised.
Asylum procedures will be expedited to maintain optimal treatment of foreigners heading north. The pick and release of undocumented people will be repealed, so that immigrants can be detained until the immigration process is over.
