The NFL Honors Super Bowl runs on Thursday nights during the week.

NFL Honors, the prime-time television event during which Associated Press individual league awards are revealed, will be held Thursday for the first time, and will be broadcast live by ABC.

The show begins February 10 at the Sophie Entertainment District’s YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, and will also be available on the NFL Network and ESPN+.

In addition to the NWN’s awards for MVP, Coach of the Year, Comeback Player, Offensive Player and Offensive Rookie, Defensive Player and Defensive Rookie, and Assistant Coach of the Year, the event will announce the league’s Walter Payton Man of the Year.

The 2022 Pro Football Hall of Fame class will also be revealed during the broadcast, which begins at 9 p.m. EST.

Other awards presented include Salute to Service; Deacon Jones Award for Sacking the Leader of the NFL; and the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.

“We’ve been wanting to do Thursdays for a few years,” said senior vice president Mark Quenzel, head of content for NFL Media. “The primary reason has been that we wanted to spread some big events. We have ‘opening night’ on Monday and a whole bunch of things, the commissioner’s press conference.

“With the NFL Honors and the Super Bowl obviously taking place on Saturday and Sunday, we thought it would be great to move it earlier in the week and have more tentpole events.”

ABC and ESPN+, under Disney’s umbrella, replace NBC as the broadcaster. NBC, in which the games will take place, is also broadcasting the Winter Olympics from Beijing in February.

The venue was a no-brainer, considering it’s on the premises that included Ram and Charger’s home.

“It’s a great venue,” Quenzel said, “arguably the best we’ve been in, taking nothing away from the others. It’s brand new and built right next to the stadium, it seats 6,000, Which connects it to Radio City Music Hall, and it’s state-of-the-art. And then it’s surrounded by the beautiful stadium and the grounds and lake that surround it.”

Some have wondered why the Hall of Fame announcement is not a stand-alone show. Quenzel points out that the NFL Honors not only include the start of a new class of the year, but it’s also one of the highlights.

“I’m a big fan of Hall of Fame and the league is closely associated with Hall, and I think it’s better for everyone to have it as part of the show,” Quenzell said, noting that Hall’s announcement comes in the middle of a two-hour broadcast, a crucial venue for any awards show. “The power of the crowd. Of course it’s a centerpiece, so are the NWN rewards.

“Look at the total accolades that go together. I’m not sure that anything on its own will be as strong as backed by other accolades.”

No hosts have yet been determined, nor are there any entertainers for the NFL Honors. But players – present and past – come under the spotlight anyway.

“NFL Honors has always been an intersection of the NFL and entertainment,” Quenzel said. “The show manifests itself like this. To have the NFL Honors two hundred feet away from where the Super Bowl will be played and is as good as it gets in the entertainment capital of the world.
