The Venezuelan authorities are fighting the plague “Hylesia metabus”, an insect known in the region as “hairy pompret” that causes skin damage to people and that has spread to cities located in the east, the Ministry of Health reported this Sunday.

It means that “the fumigation work against the insect” has begun in the states of Sucre, Delta Amacuro and Monagas, three regions located in front of the Caribbean Sea, where there are more than two million people.

Only in Sucre has the aerial dispersal of 10,000 hectares of mangroves belonging to the Gulf of Paria begun; a task which they hope to attack the insect in its larval stage.

A total of “380,000 inhabitants of Eje de Paria will benefit from the spraying process”, which will “reduce the density of the pompret hairy population”, the Office of the Governor said on Twitter.

The Venezuelan government has also installed stations to attract and capture the insect in some areas, such as the town of Caripito, in the state of Monagas.

These insects emit a stinging substance that has caused epidermal dermatitis in hundreds of people in recent weeks; according to local media reviews; without confirming the number of people affected by this plague.
