MONTREAL – A three-year-old boy and objects used by his suspected kidnapper were found on the south bank of the Saint Lawrence River in northeastern Quebec City. The police said this was a sign that the couple were still alive and in the area.
Quebec police spent the third day searching the area for Jake Côté, who was the subject of the Amber alert.
The police said the main search area was near the town of Saint Paul, Quebec, on the Gaspé Peninsula, where the 36-year-old David Court allegedly kidnapped his son.
After investigators discovered an all-terrain vehicle believed to be used on Cote Island, the Amber Alert was extended to parts of New Brunswick across the province on Wednesday.
The provincial police said at a press conference on Friday: “The investigation and search conducted on the ground from the beginning enabled us to discover the items used by David and Jack Cot.”
“We have analyzed these objects and can now confirm that the DNA found in them belongs to David and Jack Cot.”
The police said the discovery confirmed that the father and son had been in the search area since the Amber alert was issued.
“The ground search for Jack and David Kurt continues tirelessly,” the police said. “Several police officers and special teams will continue to search the Ste-Paule area throughout the night.”
Residents in the area were warned that the police would use loudspeakers and voice carriers to broadcast messages and try to communicate with Corte.
The police said: “At this time, we are confident to find that the father and son are still alive.”
Late Thursday, the police said they believed the suspect was hiding in a densely forested area, and pointed out that Côté had wild survival skills and could use materials collected from nearby cabins and trailers to survive with the son.
The police have advised the public to watch out for any abnormalities, but stay away from the forest and avoid participating in the search, as Kurt may carry weapons.
The suspect is 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs about 180 pounds, has brown hair and blue eyes.
Police said he was wearing a dark sweater with a black logo and black military uniforms when he last appeared.
According to descriptions, the boy had short hair and was wearing a blue camouflage T-shirt with the number six or nine printed with silver stripes on the sleeves and bottom.
