TORONTO ( Associated Press) — JD Martinez broke a tie by running a home run after taking a hit with loaded bases in the 10th inning, and the Boston Red Sox avoided a sweep as they beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 on Wednesday night . Three match series.
Alex Verdugo hit a two-run homer and had four RBIs, while Franchi Cordero hit four to help Boston beat Toronto for the third time in 10 meetings this season.
At second base to lead the innings with automatic sprinter Jackie Bradley Jr., Blue Jays right-hander David Phelps (0–2) ran Rob Refnsider and Raphael Devers to load the bases before Martinez, who had lost his Didn’t hit hit in last 13 turns.
Bradley scored after Phelps hit Martinez in the back with the pitch on a 1-2 count. Tim Mezza heaved a sigh of relief and forced Xander Bogarts into a double play, but Verdugo followed with a two-run double to make it 6-3.
Matt Straum (3-2) beat Bo Bichet and Vladimir Guerrero Jr in the ninth, but dropped an RBI single by Santiago Espinal and an RBI double by Cavan Biggio in the 10th. Straum ended the match by dominating George Springer.
